Effect of food and baby price increase on egg and chicken market
“Earlier, I used to buy a sack of food at the price of Tk 1,200 to Tk 1,400, and I used to buy each chicken for Tk 11 to Tk 15. Now one bag of food has to be bought for 3 thousand 600 to 3 thousand 700 taka. And the baby has to be bought for 58 to 60 taka. Due to which the farm now has to sell chicken at a higher price.
Abdul Halim, the owner of Bhai Bhai Poultry Farm in Gazipur, said these words while talking about this sector including the increase in the price of chicken and eggs on Wednesday afternoon. He told Prothom Alo, “Earlier, we used to sell each chicken wholesale from the farm at Tk 98 to Tk 110 per kg. And now it is selling at 170 to 175 taka. And that chicken is being sold in the retail market for Tk 220.
On the other hand, Swadhin Mia, a trader in Joydevpur chicken market, said, “We are buying broiler chicken from the farm at the price of Tk 190 to Tk 200.” Selling at 220 taka per kg. Apart from this, we are buying golden chicken at 230 to 240 taka and selling it at 280 taka per kg.
It has been observed that the prices of chicken and eggs have increased in both wholesale and retail markets in Gazipur. This has an impact at the customer level. As a result, the sale of chicken eggs in the market has decreased. The leaders of the chicken business organization say that the price of eggs and chicken will increase further.
The chicken and egg market was stable at such high prices for a month. But once again the price of these two products, one of the main staples of nutrition for the common people of the country, has become unstable. The price of broiler chicken has increased by Tk 50 to Tk 60 per kg, golden chicken by Tk 30 to Tk 35. Apart from this, the price of eggs has increased by Tk 20 to Tk 25 per dozen. Yesterday such pictures were seen in Gazipur’s Joydevpur, Chandana Chowrasta, Bhogra and Konabari markets.
Looking around the markets, there is a sudden volatility in the prices of chicken and eggs in the market. Because of this, there is a dispute between buyers and sellers about the price in the shop. Broiler chickens were sold at Tk 150 to Tk 160 per kg last week, now they are selling at Tk 210 to Tk 220. The price of eggs per dozen increased from Tk 120 to Tk 130 to Tk 150 to Tk 155 within a week. Golden chicken has increased from Tk 230 to Tk 280 to Tk 285 per kg.
Chicken trader Sujan Mia of Joydevpur raw market said that the price of chicken in the market was normal even a month ago. Due to the increase in various events including picnics and weddings at the end of winter, the demand for chicken has increased. Due to this, the price of chicken has increased.
Abul Kashem, a buyer in Konabari market, said, “Last week I bought broiler chicken for Tk 155, now they are saying Tk 220. The price of eggs is asking 50 taka. But I bought it earlier for 40 taka. Income is lower than before, while expenditure is increasing. If this is the case, how will the family run?
When asked about the sudden increase in the price of eggs and chickens, Bangladesh Poultry Farmers Protection National Council Central General Secretary Khandaker Mohsin said that food is not available as per the demand at present. Because chicken food production factories are constantly closing down. This has reduced food production. In the future, the price of chicken and eggs will increase. LC can’t be opened, no money in bank, dollar crisis. 80% of the cost of egg and chicken production is in food. At the moment there is a terrible crisis with chicken feed. However, the price may decrease slightly during fasting. Because then the sales will be a little lower than now.
Gazipur District Commissioner Anisur Rahman told Prothom Alo, “We monitor the market through the market officer throughout the year. There are some unscrupulous traders in the market. They can increase the price at will. If something like that happens, we will raid the market and take necessary measures.
